Big Jump in 2017 Education and Support Programs

Congratulations to all NAMI affiliate staff and volunteers on a job well done in 2017. NAMI affiliates in Oregon reported a 42 percent increase in NAMI signature program offerings last year as compared with 2016. In all, affiliates reported offering 951 signature programs events, such as support group meetings, education classes, and presentations such as In Our Own Voice and Ending the Silence.

Affiliates provided more programs and did a more thorough job of reporting program data, accounting for the significant increase. Support group programs accounted for most of the increase, in which affiliates held 831 meetings and served 6,166 participants in 2017 vs. 541 meetings with 3,863 participants in 2016. Affiliates reporting the largest increases were NAMI Central Oregon, NAMI Lane County, and NAMI Washington County. For details, see the Program Participation Data page of our website.

NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. In Oregon, we offer free courses and support groups, both for individuals living with mental illness and for their family members and other loved ones.

We have classes specially tailored for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illness, for Veterans and active military members and their families, and for Latino families affected by mental illness. NAMI volunteers also make public presentations in schools, businesses, and other public venues to help ensure that those who need services can find them, and to reduce the stigma around mental illness by showing that recovery is possible.
