Smith Award Dinner a Success!
Thanks so much to all who made our 9th Annual Gordon & Sharon New Freedom Award dinner a success! We were thrilled to join Sen. Gordon and Sharon Smith to honor Oregon State Sen. Jackie Winters, R-Salem, and Dave Underriner, chief executive for the Oregon region of Providence Health and Services, at our dinner Oct. 3.
Special thanks to the Smiths, Kerry Tymchuk, presenting sponsor Providence Health & Services, and emcee Cathy Marshall of KGW for a fantastic evening! In addition to the Smiths, we were pleased to have several previous honorees attend, including former Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski accompanied by former first lady Mary Oberst; Portland City Commissioner Amanda Fritz; Oregon Senate President Peter Courtney; former Multnomah County Commissioner Lisa Naito; rresiding Judge for Multnomah County Circuit Court Nan Waller; former state senator Margaret Carter; and Judy Cushing, founder of Lines for Life.
Created by NAMI Oregon in 2009 to honor the mental health advocacy efforts of former United States Senator Gordon Smith and his wife, Sharon, the New Freedom Award is presented annually and recognizes an individual or individuals for their leadership on mental health issues.
Funds raised from this dinner allow us to provide signature education programs, support groups, a toll-free information and referral helpline, and other services across the state of Oregon to individuals living with mental illness, as well as their loved ones, at no cost to them.
